war at home

(inspired by a city news article)
-
- gotta be a better way to live
- than killing fast or slow
- with banging weapons red on metal
- or poison substances deadly lethal
- or toxic words no love to give
-
- kids growing up too fast
- or not growing up at all
- even way past 18 years
- giving birth to twins
- called despair and poverty
-
- fathered by nothing
- mothered by fateful hate
- or hateful fate
- the graffiti’s hard to read
- spray painted in shattered blood
-
- lovers and relatives crying now
- cameras film the obscene
- for public disinformation
-
- people are colored alright
- crime-tape yellow
- or glaring puke green
- sanguine red and petroleum black
- but mostly mortal grey
-
- one weapon two lives ruined
- one dead and one not alive
- how long must my people wait
- let my people go sweet heavens
- free us free them from selfish selves
-
- don’t matter skins’ colors babies
- we’re all dyin’ if we ain’t livin’
- ain’t no white powder or green cash
- gonna save our souls from justice
- nor give young and old folks peace
-
- if we can’t stop livin’ for dyin’
- if we can’t start lovin’ and likin’
- if we can’t quit the evils within
- each one ourselves together
- make new the damaged space
